“To photograph is to appropriate the thing photographed, it means putting oneself into a certain relation to the world of knowledge”

I agree 100%, you have to have some sort of understanding in what ever form of art you’re doing. Feel the energy that emerges from whatever or whoever you’re photographing. A sense of connection must be at play.
“Everyone can relate to this work,”
“I think [the series is] important in relationship to Black experience, but it’s not about race,”
I feel like when people view Weems work they may think that she’s targeting a specific audience, but in fact it’s the opposite, including every race, gender, or ethnicity have proved to us that she isn’t focused on shining the like on African Americans but the issues around us.
“Men put me down as the best woman painter. I think I’m one of the best painters.”
“And the one thing that I did know was that the ways in which women had photographed themselves up until that moment for the most part really didn’t interest me.
Anything with a female touch on it views by a male will be considered unworthy or needs more work, she’s constantly proving that she’s more than a “black female” painting , it’s a painter and shall be appreciated by her talent and skills instead of how she looks. Usually when a woman is photographed she’s naked, or being photographed as an object, these women are shown doing what they understand, their talents are being displayed not their appearance.
