With this image I was thing about Mendieta's relation to life or death. her similar works show herself in her body with nature. This one she is wrapped like a mummy and the ground. it seems as if it's the opposite of what she was trying to with her other images. Where one is a reconnection of nature showing life, this is what happens after that. in other words death, at least that's how I see it.
“The show allows you to participate in an alternative form of art history,”
This quote is about if the female gaze exists. I think it does but it is not something that is common or has the same level of weight in comparison. Most of history was male dominant, so we exclusively see the "male gaze" at all times. there is a power dynamic there that keeps seeing things from a women's perspective on the back burner. You could say the "male gaze' suppresses the "Female gaze".
“The making of my ‘Silueta’ in nature keeps the transition between my homeland and my new home,” she once said. “It is a way of reclaiming my roots and becoming one with nature. Although the culture in which I live is part of me, my roots and cultural identity are a result of my Cuban heritage.”
It seems as if she is connecting her body and heritage with the earth. We are all of nature, and by showing this she is reclaiming these roots. Perhaps the roots of us all which has a connection to her and her heritage.
