Title: Living in America
I chose to talk about the four main events that occurred on American soil that contributed to the development of America and its society. I focused on the industrial era, slavery, religion and technology. The materials I used were, tissue paper, paint, markers, cardboard, shoestrings, sewing strings, rhinestones , pictures that I printed out, and also drew. At the center of the piece is how America is promoted to the world, with the quote “America, land of the free, home of the brave.” Essentially my vision was to show how America was built and how we are conditioned to believe otherwise. The artist that inspired me was Ben Jones, after viewing his exhibition, it gave me the idea to create what it’s really like being American, this project speaks to my identity because without the fight of child labor, I would probably be working in a factory right now, with the women rights, I grew up raised by 5 women and so I felt like as a feminist, I needed to include their struggles that built a household, with slavery, learning about what really happened to my ancestors can allow me to better understand my ethnicity and the color of my skin, with religion, I grew up in a house with a Christian mother and a catholic stepfather, so their pov to living were very different. And lastly I’m gen Z, the generation of technology and the advancement of intellectual life, technology controls us all where we want to address it or not.
