My collage project consists of many elements cut from magazines, books as well as printed. In this collage, I decided to critique some of the social and political aspects of the U.S. I included pieces that represent inflation and how the value of money is becoming less and less. This can be hard on middle class and low income families. I also added a piece about the healthcare system we have. Which is also difficult to obtain for many due to the extremely high medical bills. On the bottom of the collage I critiqued some of the social aspects of society. The media often influences us and sets standards to which some feel pressured to meet. Women are often sexualized and critiqued about their body type. Especially because of the media, many feel the need to surgically change their appearance in order to meet these beauty standards. On the right side of my project I wanted to create a contrast of the left side. I added a background setting in nature and included a woman positioned in a state of tranquility with flowers around her head. The intention behind this was to show a piece of my mind and how I like to bring myself back down to ground when I feel like there is too much going on around me. With the corrupt systems placed, the daily stress of working and trying to survive in the fast paced city we often forget about the beauty of nature around us. In this project, I didn’t follow the exact style as the artist Hannah Hoch, however she did inspire me and give me the idea of addressing the social and political aspects within my collage while also adding pieces of surrealism and dada.
