Week 2 Selfie - Jackie Logan

I wanted to do an image that was more inherently feminine. A lot of her work comes from that perspective but I wanted to show that they are also human experiences that can relate to us all by showing how you can get a similar but different idea with a man in a similar image.

" Cindy was one of the first to explore the idea of the malleability or fluidity of identity.”

Sherman’s coup was to cast herself as subject matter, making each of her staged characters the star of an implicit narrative,"

She explores ideas of herself as a women in different roles in society. She sees herself as flexible part of many narratives.

“Cindy Sherman opened a lot of the doors. She was the trendsetter in terms of distorted characters within self-portraiture. Originally painters painted self-portraits, and then she kind of blew it open with photographic portraiture, and now there are all these avenues younger artists are taking, which would not have been so easy without her work.”

Some wouldn't consider a phot of yourself a self portrait. Like most wouldn't say the selfies you take are self portraits. But the clear artistic value of her work can't be denied. It help show the value of photography and what it can show.

"John Waters has called her a “female female impersonator.” "

It is waited thing to think about. But in all these images Sherman plays characters. They seemed so tied to her I mage as a women that you can attach her to them but they are all very different. She is putting herself in these positions to make a lager statement about women in society. thus she is impersonating but in the impersonal way you would think of a man doing it.

"In fact, her images are so foundational to feminist art criticism, to notions of the “male gaze,” that it can be difficult to see them for themselves "

A lot of her photos are similar to shots you would see in movies that are from the Male Gaze. She really gives you a history female portrayals in media. And the similarities leave room for thought about what she's doing and why.
