Weekly Selfie 5 - Daniel Lau

Sleepwalking

- "Sleepwalking" suggests someone moving through life in a daze, detached from reality. With this concept, I would explore with my sleepwalking journey and challenge the viewers with what I'm dreaming about.

Yoko ono - A Groundbreaking Artist, Activist, Fighter / Quotes

Bob Landroth - "It would be fair to say that John Lennon influenced Ono as much as Ono influenced Lennon, in some ways that improved and progressed both of their careers. The “pre-Lennon” phase in Ono’s artworks encouraged a Zen-like dissolution of thought, and after she met the love of her life, she began shifting towards a greater campaign for peace, using not only galleries but the mass media as well."

- I can see that this suggests that John Lennon and Yoko Ono influenced each other positively. He mentioned how Ono's early art was Zen-like, but meeting Lennon shifted her focus to advocating for peace through galleries and the media. This also shows how their partnership evolved and affected their careers. Basically, it's a nice reflection on their interconnected influence and their journey as artists and activists.

Bob Landroth - "Throughout the Beatles’ break up and fall out between the members, Yoko Ono and John Lennon pursued their anti-war goals and dedicated their lives to the causem and released the, now legendary, single Imagine. The couple collaborated on art, film and musical projects, becoming famous for their series of conceptual shows which were dedicated to promoting peace."

- I can see that during The Beatles' breakup, John Lennon and Yoko Ono stayed focused on their anti-war work. It talks about their dedication, highlighted by the release of "Imagine." He even mentioned how they worked together in art, film, and music, especially known for shows promoting peace. Honestly, the commitment to their beliefs and the big impact they made through their art and activism is something to admire about.

Interview with Shaun Leonardo / Quotes

Shaun Leonardo - "I attribute my work ethic to them. However, it was in the mentality of striving for the best that I was also taught that success meant economic stability and mobility. And so art wasn’t really within my vision as a child: I never quite know what inspired me, other than the moments where I did see and take in art. I don’t know what drove me to identify as an artist because it wasn’t within my familial background—not that I know of anyway—and my only exposure to art, growing up in Queens, were the moments here and there where we visited the Queens Museum and the Metropolitan Museum."

- We can see that Leonardo's tells us how family and societal pressures shape an artist's journey. Despite not seeing art as a career path initially, he learned the value of hard work from his upbringing. His resilience and discovery came from museum visits, which sparked his passion. His journey highlights the challenges of pursuing art but also the determination needed to overcome them. Leonardo's honesty and insights inspire others facing similar struggles.

Shaun Leonardo - "Most important, I think, was whenever I saw a master, codified “master,” at the Metropolitan Museum. Somehow, I [don’t] recall ever being dissuaded [by the fact] that those “masters” were all dead white men. I found myself seeing these “great artworks” and believing I could achieve that."

-  Leonardo's story really shows the importance of representation and believing in oneself in the artistic journey. Despite not seeing people like himself in the artworks he admired, he found inspiration and believed in his own potential. His refusal to be discouraged by the lack of diversity in the art world is a testament to his confidence and determination. Truly inspiring.

Being Marina Abramovic / Quotes

Marina Abramovic - "I had my first exhibition of paintings when I was 14. I painted my dreams. I remember being so jealous of Mozart because he started composing when he was a young child. I knew it was too late for me to be a genius, but I tried my best. I remember my first painting. It was of a candle from which there were streaks of light that were different faces, and one face fell on the table — it was my face. It was about how you inherit an image of yourself. Or something like that. It was all in green and blue."

- We can see that her early journey as an artist had a lot of ambition, self-awareness, and creativity. The fact that she started an exhibition at 14 highlights her dedication to art. She admired Mozart's talent despite feeling it's too late for her to be a genius, showing humility and determination. Her first painting, depicting a candle with faces, reflects deep themes of self-reflection. It's safe to say she has an inspiring story of creativity and perseverance at a young age, showing the power of art for self-expression.

Marina Abramovic - "I love routine. It gives the day order. I feel good when I follow a routine. If I don’t — when I’m traveling, and my schedule gets crazy — I become unbalanced. I love the regularity of a monastery: The monks wake up before sunrise, then they go to the toilet. Then they do the meditation. Then breakfast. Then they will do physical work. I try to follow a very similar schedule. I like to wake up early. It’s very funny to talk about going to the toilet — Western culture is ashamed of this, but I want to discuss this. Is that OK?"

- It's clear to us that she appreciates routine and compares it to the structured life of monks. She finds balance and order in it. She's open about discussing daily habits like waking up early and going to the toilet, breaking societal taboos. This honesty encourages open conversations about bodily functions. With all honesty, Abramovic's willingness to share personal experiences in a candid way is both admirable and engaging.

Marine Abramovic - Freeing The Voice

-  This performance is interesting because it offers a unique way for people to express themselves and feel empowered. It focuses on exploring your voice and overcoming inhibitions, which can be transformative. People are encouraged to dive into their emotions and creativity, leading to a feeling of freedom and self-discovery. Abramovic's guidance and the supportive atmosphere help people connect with themselves and others on a deeper level. Her performance is notable for helping people express themselves authentically and connect with others, making it an engaging experience.

Marina Abramovic - Rhythm 10

-  This particular performance is really fascinating due to its unique concept. She explores the connection between the body and rhythm in a deep and intense way. Using knives in her movements adds tension and excitement, as she risks harming herself. The piece challenges what we think of as art, making us think about control, vulnerability, and life. Abramovic's bravery in pushing her limits shows her dedication to pushing artistic boundaries and making people think deeply, which makes it really captivating.
