Cindy Sherman quotes

"I still like the idea of challenging myself through the more hands-on methods, only because I think it’s more challenging when you are limited. With Photoshop anything goes, and I don’t want to make easy crazy characters just because I can."

- With Sherman's quote, I can see she's saying that she likes to challenge herself by using hands-on methods instead of just using digital tools like Photoshop. She thinks it's more challenging to work with limitations, and she doesn't want to create easy or overly fancy characters just because digital tools allow it. This shows she values the craft of creating art and wants to keep things challenging in her creative process. I personally agree with her methods since I like making my art photos less digital and exaggerated. Taking black and white photos are known to be my main style when making a family album.

"Inconsiderate, rude behavior drives me nuts. And I guess the inconsiderate rudeness of social ineptitude definitely fuels my work."

- It's clear to me that Cindy Sherman talks about how rude behavior bothers her, and she says it affects her art. She shows that she cares about how people treat each other and thinks politeness is important. I relate to to her quote since the crazy experience I had at high school. Despite the toxic relationship with the staff and dealing redicolous protocols in school, it somewhat made me stronger, knowing that I came so far, I wasn't going to let them bring me down.

"So many things suddenly made sense for the clowns, for the whole idea. I’d been going through a struggle, particularly after 9/11; I couldn’t figure out what I wanted to say. I still wanted the work to be the same kind of mixture – intense, with a nasty side or an ugly side, but also with a real pathos about the characters – and clowns have an underlying sense of sadness while they’re trying to cheer people up. Clowns are sad, but they’re also psychotically, hysterically happy."

- After reading her quote,  I see she talks about why she made her "Clown" series and the feelings she wanted to show in her art. She went through a tough time, especially after 9/11, trying to figure out what she wanted to say with her work. But she still wanted her art to be intense, with some dark and sad parts mixed in, just like before. Sherman chose clowns as her subjects because they're complicated. She noticed that clowns seem happy and make people laugh, but deep down, they're also sad or even a little crazy. I personally relate to her "Clown" series due to my personal experiences at high school. I never enjoyed my time at high school, even though I tried to. It's mostly because of my bad relationship with the staff in the school, who had no compassion and understanding with me. As a teenager, I showed my happiness to people around me, but deep down I was unhappy and frustrated. I was sad when I lost a lot of my friends since most of them transfered to different schools because they hated the environment in the school and the constant fighting they had. I was upset when the high school principal snatched my cell phone right out of my hand in the hallway only because I was texting to my dad letting letting him know that I wasn't sick. My history teacher treated me and some of friends like idiots whenever we get an average grade in our tests, he would call us stupid or bunch of idiots. In the end, I managed to survive throughout the four years of high school after graduation, which finally made me truly happy.
